Why can't I post to my Facebook personal profile?

Short answer: Meta does not allow any third-party app to publish to Facebook personal profiles. It removed that ability in August 2018. Skylane only uses official platform APIs, so it posts to Facebook Pages, not personal profiles.

What changed in 2018

In August 2018 Meta (then Facebook) removed the publish_actions permission from its platform. That permission was what allowed apps to post to a person's own timeline. Since then there has been no approved way for any scheduling tool to post to a personal profile.

What about tools that still offer it?

Some tools still advertise posting to personal profiles. To do it without the official API, they have to either:

  • ask for your Facebook password and sign in as you, or
  • run a browser bot that clicks around Facebook pretending to be you.

Both go against Meta's terms. Meta's systems are designed to detect automated or unusual logins, which can lead to security checkpoints, temporary blocks or your account being restricted or disabled. Handing your password to a third party also means anyone who breaches that company could get into your account.

We will not put your account at risk in that way. Skylane never asks for passwords and never uses browser bots.

What you can do instead

  • Create a Facebook Page for your brand, business or public persona. Pages are free, can be scheduled to through official tools, and come with insights. Connect it using Connect a Facebook Page.
  • Use Meta's own tools for your personal profile. You can schedule personal posts directly in Facebook where Meta offers it.
  • Post to your Page, then share it to your profile manually when you want your friends to see it.

Does this affect Instagram?

Instagram is similar: only professional accounts (Business or Creator) can be published to by apps. Switching is free - see Connect an Instagram account.
